How does Ms. Laurene Powell Jobs make her OWN money?
Ms. Laurene
Powell Jobs is a widow of late marketing genius Steve Jobs, and inherited
billions of Steve Jobs’ dollars.
What would you feel if she would invite you to
become the member of her foundation, and all you had to do is just to pay
$5000,00?
Tempting?
Weird?
Curious?
In that case, let’s
start from the beginning.
Since the day I
learned about XQsuperschool project (https://xqsuperschool.org/) I have been trying to reach out Ms. Laurene
Powell Jobs.
I did it three times.
First time I wrote an essay about innovations in
education, and I sent an email via the XQsuperschool
website.
Then I tried to
reach her via Emerson Collective (http://www.emersoncollective.com/).
And the third time,
and the scope of this story, is when I tried to reach Ms. Laurene
Powell Jobs via Facebook.
The reason for me trying to reach Ms. Laurene Powell Jobs is described in my original
post: (“XQsupesrschool – a
blessing or a waste of money?”; http://www.gomars.xyz/xq.htm). Shortly, I
tried to point at the fact, that with the current approach her initiative might
affect several American high schools,
but will not make an impact on ALL American high schools (as she claimed).
I still stand for every word in that post.
I am sure neither Ms. Jobs nor her close associates had read the post,
but since then I wrote many more, including “When
reforms are due, too much of experience may be as bad as too little of it.”
(https://teachologyforall.blogspot.com/2017/11/bgates.html) praising Bill Gates’ change in his view on
public education.
I thought that Ms. Jobs could find this post useful, and I thought that maybe
social media could help me to attract attention to the issue, which I call
“philanthropic disaster in education”.
So, I went to Facebook (where else?) and searched for her
name.
I found her Facebook account and I sent a direct Facebook message.
To my big surprise, she responded.
If you scroll down, you find my Facebook communication with Ms. Laurene Powell Jobs (with two comment in red).
Of course, when I
got the response from Ms. Jobs, I got excited.
But soon “she” cut
me off, I could not contact her account any more. I thought, she realized that
I was no more than just an average physics teacher (I’m not!).
Then “she” came back
and told me that she is a very busy person (that I understand), and redirected
me to one of her associates, Mr. Robinson.
My communication with Mr. Robinson follows below

Long story short, in order to become the member
of Powel foundation I would have to pay money; $5000,00 to:

Naturally, I am not
going to pay. It feels wrong to me when a person whose net worth is 21 billion
dollars would be collecting fees from people who she invited to become the
members of her foundation. If that is a case, Ms. Jobs’ approach to reforming
education is definitely bound to fail.

Everyone who dreams of changing education should keep it mind - it is NOT about
money per se, it is about how to use those money. For example, it is a
well-known fact that many countries whose kids are at the top of the list in
STEM spend much less per a pupil than U.S.
It is also a well-known fact that philanthropists have spent in the past
hundreds of millions of dollars without making a visible shift in education (on
a large scale; excluding local and disconnected success)

versions (written and typed).
I was not sure what
membership level to check, so I checked two the most appropriate from my point
of view.
I am not requesting
any funds - at least at this point, because at first I would prefer to have a
discussion with a more experience fellow member or members, maybe even from MA
(or remotely).
I have been working on
several projects, and they are in different state of clarity, and also
different projects would require different scales, and one of the hopes is that
the conversation would help we to select the first project to be initiated.
Plus, after leaving
Russia 17 years ago, I have not had an experience in managing a project; at
this point in my professional career I feel more like Steve Wozniak without
